I am glad…
… that people are looking into Newt Gingrich’s marital infidelities.
I am not glad, however, that they are using the opportunity to mock and vilify open marriages. Everyone’s talking about it like the idea of an open marriage is a despicable thing. It’s not. It’s a lifestyle choice that two (or more) people can openly and honestly enter into and be happy with.
Gingrich may have wanted an open marriage, but he was never in one. Sleeping around on your wife, and then proposing an open marriage when she finds out about it is not how it works, buddy. Obviously his wife at the time was not interested in it. So he left her.
It’s perfectly fine to criticize Newt Gingrich for attempting to assuage his wife by proposing an open marriage. And it’s perfectly fine to mock him for attempting to live this lifestyle, and succeeding at being a guy who sleeps around and leaves his wife for a new one when he gets bored while at the same time speaking out about how the values traditional marriage are under attack (especially while being the driving force behind the Clinton/Lewinsky investigation). That’s all fine. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy.
But it’s not okay to make a mockery of the idea of open marriage itself.
We’re starting to see a trend where homosexuality is becoming more and more accepted into society (even among conservatives). Some say it’s the last hurdle in the civil rights movement, but there’s another one very close to it, and that’s the world of open relationships, polyamory and the like.
One day it may be perfectly legal for two men or two women to marry anywhere in the country, but the chances of that also including three-person marriages (or four, or five, etc) is highly unlikely. Hopefully after one, the other follows shortly thereafter.
Why I Don’t Give to The Salvation Army
![]()
Just a reminder of the ideas and beliefs your money supports when you drop change in those little red buckets. From the Salvation Army website:
Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage.
And…
The Salvation Army deplores society’s ready acceptance of abortion, which reflects insufficient concern for vulnerable persons, including the unborn. The Salvation Army holds to the Christian ideals of chastity before marriage and fidelity within the marriage relationship and, consistent with these ideals, supports measures to prevent crisis pregnancies. It is opposed to abortion as a means of birth control, family planning, sex selection or for any reason of mere convenience to avoid the responsibility for conception.
They should really stop being called “pro-life” and instead be called “anti-privacy” or “anti-rights”. “Pro-life” implies “pro-choice” is really “pro-death.” From where I see it, if that so-called “baby” can’t survive without being inside of a womb, the woman gets to decide what to do with it.
On the lighter side (maybe), I understand WTF Podcast host Marc Maron had a bit back in the day about why the religious right are so concerned with abortions. It basically boils down to the idea that an abortion might somehow fuck up the second coming of Christ and his joke involves a team of Christians gathered around a dumpster saying things like “We can rebuild him, we can make him stronger…” etc.
That is all.
Baby, an informal term for a young child spanning from birth to about 3 years old.
How does abortion make you the mother of a dead baby when a baby was not involved in an abortion? Your logic is, excuse my french, fucking ignorant, and lacks even the most basic of knowledge in the most basic of definitions.
If a person puts their child up for adoption, they are no longer a mother. If a person chooses to abort a fetus, they are no longer pregnant.
So yes, abortion makes you unpregnant and does not make you the mother/father/bearer (stopping being a cissexist asshole) of a dead baby, because, guess what, no babies are involved in abortions.
Thank you for the commentary. Looking at this made me throw up in my mouth a little. Fucking pro-lifers.
